Description
The Cepas Centenarias cuvée is one of the most iconic wines from Bierzo, crafted by the family of the renowned oenologist Raúl Pérez. This wine comes from a rigorous selection of very old Mencía vines, some over 100 years old, located in the prestigious Valtuille de Abajo terroir. Carefully preserved, the 2006 vintage now offers a rare opportunity to taste a great Spanish cellar-worthy wine at its peak, combining the historic power of the estate with the evolving finesse of a grand cru.
Made primarily from Mencía, complemented by a few native grape varieties found in the old plots (Alicante Bouschet, Estaladiña), planted on sandy and clay soils in high-altitude parcels rich in minerals, typical of the hilly landscape of Bierzo.
"Cepas Centenarias" refers to the pre-phylloxera, centenarian vines that offer natural concentration and unique depth.
Hand-harvested. Traditional fermentation with controlled extraction. The wine benefited from extended aging in French oak barrels (approximately 12 months) followed by a very long rest in the bottle.
The nose is fascinating and complex. It opens with notes of jammy dark fruits and kirsch, evolving into aromas of cigar box, truffle, fine leather, and graphite. A floral hint of dried violet persists despite its age.
The palate is dense and monumental, yet incredibly silky. The tannins are fully integrated, creating a velvety texture. The residual acidity of the Bierzo terroir maintains a surprising freshness, carrying the finish with notes of bitter cocoa and sweet spices.
