Description
A Grand Cru Classé de Graves, Château Haut-Bailly is one of the great benchmarks of Pessac-Léognan. Its vineyard sits on a particularly well-drained gravel ridge, with soils of sand mixed with gravel and a subsoil of faluns, rich in stones and fossilized shells. This terroir produces wines renowned for their finesse, depth, and freshness.
The 2011 vintage benefited from a very hot and dry spring, followed by a cooler, normally rainy summer, and then a hot and dry September that allowed for excellent grape ripening. The blend combines 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.
After several years of evolution, the wine now offers a complex nose of ripe red and black fruits, blackcurrant, tobacco, spices, and smoky notes. On the palate, the substance is both dense and elegant, with a lovely freshness, fine, polished tannins, and a long, slightly mineral finish.
A superb Pessac-Léognan that has reached an interesting stage of maturity, which will pair well with a cut of beef, poultry with mushrooms, roast lamb, or aged cheeses.
